There is nothing worse than....

I have used this phrase a lot lately...and when things get tough my usual positive spin on things takes a turn for the south. It is hard to stay positive when things are not going your way. In more than just barn stuff, life has been tough.

But I do have the old saying...

Basically when shit hits the fan, you dont give up. You persevere. When everyone else would walk away, you stay and fight it out.

I need this reminder right now because I am feeling particularly down and out about my own personal riding capabilities right now.

Tillie meanwhile is quite happy....most of the time
Its one thing to know what is limiting you in regards to progress with your horse and their training level...you know, setting realistic expectations. Which I am notorious for putting the cart before the horse and getting wayyyyy too ahead of myself. However, I do think I have done a much better job this year keeping my expectations in check.

Like going into a training level event, but not give any shits about time
So where am I feeling the hardship?

I have not been one to back off a fence because it is big. I attribute much of that to my extremely courageous partner. Tillie and I have never had a refusal or run out - only 1x schooling xc and it was completely my fault. I feel incredibly fortunate to have such a forgiving horse in that way.

But where I am currently struggling is my own ability when it comes to setting Tillie up so she can get the best jump possible. I kid you not...I can't even jump a beginner novice fence without biffing a distance right now when just a short while ago we could own a training level stadium course smoothly and out of a forward rhythm.

Well we tried to learn how to gallop the other day....Tillie learned fast is fun while Mommy learned that we can go faster than the speed of light with steering being optional and half halting is no where in our definition
In short, it really sucks when the realization hits you that your own incompetence is hindering your progress. I get it. We all face the fact we have things to improve on and will forever be working on something. But I am without a doubt in an existential crisis of "what the fuck are you doing?!"

I can sit here and brag about how far we have come this year and the little things since that are better. But at the end of the day, my recent lessons have felt a bit redundant. No fault to Tillie at all. I know when Tillie is resistant and not cooperating and for a little bit there, she deserved that blame. She sort of kind of did turn into a fire breathing dragon when it got chilly suddenly, but we have since worked that out and the only person to blame is myself.

Yawn - Snooze - Boring says Tillie
OK, OK...I sound like I am being realllllly harsh on myself. Maybe I am. But I hate feeling like I pay for the same lesson more than once....and hate even more what my trainer must think when they repeat the same thing over and over again.

I understand the concept, but implementing it....well thats another story.

oh hayyyyyy
I havent felt this insecure in a while. Last time I did, we were in a rut...and maybe that is it: We are at another plateau ironing things out before a break through. At least I am hoping that is what it is.

Either way. It sucks. ANYONE that rides, I know can relate.

Hacking out is improving...unless is a colder day
Regardless of how hard I am on myself...I can honestly say that I am supremely excited for the leaps and bounds of progress Tillie has made even in these last few weeks when it felt like we werent. While she certainly has her issues and training needs, some newer changes have me quite excited about her future.

Stay tuned for more updates to come!

Horse eating gremlins are everywhere

Wednesdays ride was the ride I like to call "overcome with the fear of horse eating gremlins." To be fair Tillie was wonderful in the ring...it was just our experiences when we left the ring that made this ride a bit more interesting.
Trying to hold on to the simple things in life, like a pretty sunset even if our ride wasnt stellar
Wednesday I really had to talk myself into going to ride. I just was not feeling motivated, but I am glad I did go. Despite there being lessons going on with some questionable steering, Tillie was pretty focused. Not quite as soft or supple as I would like, but she would give my some lengthening of her neck without losing her tempo or the connection!

BOT mesh sheet before and after rides = a happy relaxed Tillie
I did some canter work pushing the canter forward and then asking her to back off again without using any hand. As hard as that was to do, I was really impressed with how well she did it and without sass UNTIL the lesson with the children left and she noticed Isabelle (You'll often see her in Emma's blog) being long lined in the round pen next to the ring. She locked her side eye on her and began bracing on the right rein...even though we had been working past Isabelle the entire time without problems at this point...and when I did a check and balance on it she did a bit of a head toss before settling down.

The end of our trail ride adventure...where Tillie thought everything would eat her
I made her do it one more time at the same end of the ring to establish it is possible when other horses are around and then decided to push my luck and take her on a cool down walk through the woods. After all, most days I get there after work so its too dark to go and I am usually too chicken to alone. BUT Tillie does seem to look to me more when we are without other horses and riders and I figured she needs to do this alone if we ever are going to improve and try conditioning one of these days.

She was a bit tense and looky at deer, fox, random leaves which I all scolded her slightly reminding her these things live with her in her pasture every day (Yes literally the deer come in her field every night). She kept it together until we came upon Gremlin Mountain.

I call it that because every time I have ridden this ravine/hill down to the stream crossing no matter which direction (ascending or descending) every horse, the seasoned and the green, just do not seem to like it. So we all have joked there must be horse eating gremlins down there we humans cant see...

After a few rears and spins without any bolting (see its the simple things) I got the mare down the hill and across the stream without any more trouble.

Yay for progress!

Loch Moy - Cross Country - Fails

Welp, here they are...the wonderfully colorful photos showcasing Tillie's sassy tude and my facial expressions riding through them.

Enjoy!

Not sure why I am standing straight up...but this is just wonderfully awkward all around

ANNNND I am holding my horse too tight because I can feel her build...But hey nice lower leg!

Im starting to nicely half halt here (check out my face)

Now Im asking not so nicely and Tillie is happily saying "But I jump all the things!"

A moment of peace....before I really lay into her

There goes the right shoulder...

going...
going....

Still Going.....

Gone!!! Tillie showing me just how flexible she is.

She says look I can bend this way too

I say NOOOOO...straight please

She says, I dont wanna

But ok, I go straight....But my ears will be pinned to show my dismay

Oh jump!! Ears up!

Must have not been that exciting for her, her eyes are shut.
She lands and instantly I pull her up because I feel that ripple through her back that leads to...

Oh god...head is going down...

And lower, I must. use. core.

Ok and some inside hand and we now circle.

Lets stomp our hind feet in the process.

Oh look I dressage after all!

This is when I finally stop playing nice and use a teeeeeeny tiny tap with my crop...her whole body recoils in shock.

Then dismay

And flaring angry mare stare (see the red in her eye) - Hell hath no fury like a redhead mare

Making her WALK before we start again.
More awkward me holding her too much

Right after this fence we could see home...

I decide to start half halting in mid air...

So some are quite funny...and we came out alive. Hopefully we can smooth this out around the edges the next time.
